DOOM III with maxed-out graphics
DOOM III Remastered Mod is a free mod by RemasteredRetroPC for the horror FPS video game DOOM III. This utility is an unofficial remaster of the base game. It pushes the graphics engine to its limits, significantly increasing texture quality and even adding support for ray-tracing.
Unlike other visual enhancement mods like D3HDP - DooM 3 Essential HD Pack Mod, DOOM III Remastered Mod requires a modern, powerful gaming PC to run without problems. Regardless, you can expect performance issues, especially if you’re using ray-tracing and your PC’s specs are less than ideal. It doesn’t alter the gameplay.
For graphics junkies
RemasteredRetroPC recommends a Zen 3 CPU or better and a 3000 series Nvidia GPU. Anything less powerful than the recommended specs is likely to experience horrible performance issues or crashes. The steep system requirements are due to how hard the mod pushes the game engine to its limits, squeezing out every last bit of visual fidelity possible. That being said, this is for players who want the best visuals possible.
DOOM III Remastered Mod is a huge mod, totaling over 30 gigabytes of data, which is significantly larger than the base game’s file size. It’s divided into 15 parts, requiring you to download and install each one individually. This makes the full installation of the remaster somewhat tedious, especially for those who are new to modding. Moreover, Part 15, which is the ray-tracing part, is in a different mod pack.
This remaster is a problematic mod. It abandons performance optimizations in pursuit of visual enhancement. The bloated file size, steep system requirements, tedious installation, and long list of performance issues make the worthiness of the graphics improvement questionable. It doesn’t offer anything new in terms of quality of life and gameplay. All these make the mod not very encouraging to try.
Is it worth installing?
If you just want a simple improvement to DOOM III’s graphics, there are better mods out there. The performance cost of the enhancements provided by DOOM III Remastered Mod is hard to justify. It’s too demanding even for modern machines and is a hassle to install. Ultimately, only people who are hardcore fans of the game or graphics enthusiasts will appreciate what this mod tries to accomplish.
